Commission Opens Public Consultation On Future EU Policy Framework

The European Commission has launched a public consultation to gather insights and contributions from the public further to results of the evaluation of the European Strategy on Safety and Health at Work 2007-2012.

This should help identify current and future challenges in the occupational safety and health area, and identify solutions to address these challenges.

All citizens and organisations are welcome to contribute to this consultation, which is open from 31 May 2013 to 26 August 2013.

Contributions are particularly sought from representatives of Member States' public authorities, organisations representing employees and employers, and stakeholders and experts with an interest in the area of occupational safety and health.

It will be especially important for those involved in health and safety in the UK to contribute, given that the Tory-led coalition government are campaigning to have the Working Time Directive, and all Euro health and safety legislation watered down or removed completely.

There are two important documents that can be downloaded, in order for USRs, health and safety professionals, and those just interested in workplace health and safety protection; to take part in the consultation exercise:

Public consultation on the new EU occupational safety and health policy framework

Evaluation of the European strategy on Safety and Health at Work 2007-2012

Derek Maylor, Chair of the NW BT Unions Health & Safety Co-ord said:

"The current government not only wishes to remove as much of the current health and safety workplace protection legislation from the UK statute book, but also from the European Community.

At risk are all of the European health and safety directives. When you consider that the majority of the current legislation on health and safety in the UK comes from europe and would never have emanated from the UK's parliament; it is imperative that any changes to European health and safety policy is not left to go ahead without input from the Trade Unions, USRs and health and workers in the UK."
